Saft’s 3 MW SMRX block battery design nickel-cadmium battery array is capable of delivering back-up power for well over 2 minutes, allow sufficient time for the Bonaire power plant’s diesel generators to be started and brought on line.  The energy storage system is also designed to typical grid fluctuations.  The battery array is normally held at 90% state-of-charge so it can be brought on line as an artificial load when necessary.  The batteries also maintain power quality by providing instant response to smooth out small peak loads.
