Bonaire's island power system is an operating hybrid of 11.1 MW of wind, 5.3 MW of solar, 28.5 MW of thermal generation, and a battery fleet currently described by ContourGlobal as 14 MW. The original 2010 renewable build used twelve Enercon E-44/900 turbines, one E-33/330 turbine, MAN diesel engines, and a 3 MW Saft nickel-cadmium battery. Wärtsilä added a 6 MW/6 MWh battery and GEMS controls in 2019, and ContourGlobal added a further battery and the 5.3 MW solar plant in 2023. The system remains the island's sole bulk supply to distributor WEB, although 2024 demand growth, extreme heat, and cable damage caused outages and prompted capacity and grid upgrades.
