The Fort Collins entry is the municipal FortZED Renewable and Distributed Systems Integration demonstration, not a military installation and not one co-located generator plant. From 2008 through 2013, Fort Collins Utilities aggregated PV, methane and natural-gas CHP, conventional generators, microturbines, fuel cells, thermal storage, controllable loads, and vehicle-to-grid assets at roughly five participant locations on two distribution feeders. A second phase intentionally islanded a smaller microgrid linking Colorado State University's Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory with the Northside Aztlan Community Center.

Research status
Demonstration completed and no longer operating as an integrated project. City material says Phase I achieved a 20–30% peak-demand reduction on the two feeders and Phase II demonstrated the EECL–Northside Aztlan microgrid with cybersecurity safeguards. A 2020 NREL retrospective says the project was operational in 2012 but was disbanded in 2017 because of regulatory factors, historic distribution practices, and the natural end of the roughly ten-year collaboration. Individual participant assets may have continued independently, but the central FortZED dispatch system should not be represented as current.

  • Virtual multi-site architecture

    Phase I coordinated assets at municipal facilities, New Belgium, CSU, Larimer County, and the InteGrid laboratory over two utility feeders. The aggregate resource figure therefore combines generation, storage-like thermal loads, and demand response owned by several parties rather than describing one fenced microgrid plant. [2][4][6]
