Samsø is Denmark's community-led Renewable Energy Island transition, not a single islandable microgrid. It remains electrically connected to the Danish mainland, imports and exports through that interconnection, and has no published central microgrid controller or utility-scale battery. Its landmark portfolio is 11 MW of onshore wind (11 turbines), 23 MW of offshore wind (10 turbines) and four biomass/solar-assisted district-heating networks, with household solar, heat pumps and other distributed resources. Claims of '100% renewable' refer principally to annual accounting/net energy and should not be read as fossil-free supply every hour or across transport.

Research status
The first transition reached its annual renewable-energy balance goal over roughly 1997–2007. The assets and community energy institutions remain active. In June 2025 the Danish Energy Agency extended the 23 MW offshore wind farm's production authorization from 2027 through 2037; Wind Estate is now the farm owner. Samsø's current climate plan targets a 70% greenhouse-gas reduction by 2030 versus 1990 and climate neutrality by 2050, while the Energy Academy's Island 2.0 work targets remaining fossil fuels, transport and equipment replacement. No evidence supports classifying the island as electrically islandable or continuously 100% renewable in 2026.
