Nassau County's 2016 NY Prize feasibility study evaluated a community microgrid centered on the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant and nine other critical facilities in East Rockaway, New York. It compared an advanced-digestion/biogas CHP core with wind, solar, fuel-cell, and legacy tri-fuel generation options; the report did not document a selected construction design. No later NY Prize construction award or commissioned community microgrid was found, and a later Bay Park electrical-upgrade project says the plant's four old 3.6 MW engine-generators were decommissioned after new utility feeders were installed.

  • Generation

    The proposed microgrid would combine natural gas generation with a newly-installed biogas-to-power engine, powered by gas created through waste anaerobic digestion, and combined heat and power (CHP) [1]

  • Architecture

    The concept placed generation inside the wastewater-plant fence and proposed a new 5 kV community distribution system outside it. Islanded operation was designed not to depend on utility communications, and the preferred generation path was to be black-start capable. [2]

  • Resource-plan caveat

    The report's capacity table combines existing resources and mutually exclusive or staged options. Its figures should not be added together as though every resource was contracted for one final plant. [2]
