The legacy Rodrigues record refers most directly to CEB's 1.1 MW Grenade Wind Farm—four 275 kW Vergnet turbines commissioned in 2010—but the current island microgrid is much broader. The isolated 22 kV system now combines Grenade and Trèfles wind, utility and distributed solar, a 1.5 MW/1.5 MWh battery at Pointe Monnier, and predominantly fuel-oil generation at Pointe Monnier and Port Mathurin. CEB's latest complete generation table (July 2023-June 2024) shows only 6.88% renewable generation and 93.12% fuel-oil generation, despite the long-operating wind assets.

Research status
Operational isolated island grid. For FY2023/24, CEB reported 50.54 GWh generated, 8.52 MW maximum demand, and 17,014 customers. Grenade produced 1.428 GWh (2.82% of island generation) and Trèfles 0.135 GWh (0.26%). A 1.5 MW/1.5 MWh BESS is already operating at Pointe Monnier for peak shaving and frequency regulation. In August 2025 CEB tendered two additional 1 MW/2 MWh systems (2 MW/4 MWh total) for Rodrigues, with a later public target of end-2026; commissioning was not confirmed by the research date.

CEB's FY2023/24 table reports 120 kW installed/effective, 135,000 kWh and 0.26% of generation. It began as three 60 kW turbines (180 kW) in December 2003; a 2021 assembly statement reported only one 60 kW unit contributing, so the current 120 kW rating indicates two effective units, not the original full nameplate. Grenade wind turbines

Vergnet — GEV MP 275/32

Four 275 kW turbines with approximately 32 m rotor diameter. Public turbine material gives 3.5 m/s cut-in, 12 m/s rated, and 25 m/s cut-out for the model; those are model specifications, not site performance measurements. [10][11]

Trèfles wind turbines

Vergnet

Originally three 60 kW turbines. The exact model was not found; current effective capacity is 120 kW. [7][2]

Pointe Monnier engines

MAN B&W / Wärtsilä

Two MAN B&W 9L28/32H units at 1.9 MW each (commissioned 2004) and one Wärtsilä W6L32 at 2.5 MW (commissioned 2012), plus a 0.1 MW standby set on CEB's current station page. [3]

  • Network

    Rodrigues is a non-interconnected 50 Hz island grid. A 2025 tender describes 159 km of 22 kV primary distribution, 362 km of 0.415 kV secondary distribution, and 168 distribution transformers. [6]

  • Frequency control

    Engineering documentation describes diesel governors operating in frequency-control mode with approximately 3.5% droop. The existing BESS supplements that architecture with fast frequency regulation and peak shaving. [13][6]

  • Wind history

    Trèfles was commissioned in December 2003 as a 3 x 60 kW pilot; Grenade followed in 2010 as 4 x 275 kW. A 2015 parliamentary answer reported wind then supplying about 10% of island energy, versus only 3.08% in CEB's FY2023/24 generation table. [7][2]

  • Current performance

    The FY2023/24 renewable total is 3,480,966 kWh, 6.88% of all island generation. Wind provided 3.08%, solar categories 3.80%, and fuel oil 93.12%. These shares are calculated directly from CEB's published category totals. [2]

  • Forward plan

    CEB tendered two additional batteries in 2025 and earmarked up to 2 MW of hybrid agrivoltaics for Rodrigues in its 2026 scheme. Neither is added to installed capacity absent commissioning evidence. [4][15]
