The recovered Geomun Island record should resolve to Geomundo (거문도, Port Hamilton) in Samsan-myeon, Yeosu, South Jeolla—not Geomunoreum on Jeju, where the recovered coordinates appear to point. Geomundo was selected in Korea's 2015 private 'energy-independent island' program for an LG CNS-led proposal combining 1.2 MW solar and 1.5 MW wind with the island's existing 4.5 MW diesel plant. Program reviews show the private-island initiative stalled on weak economics, and no credible construction or commissioning evidence for Geomundo was located through July 2026.
- Research status
- Stalled/unbuilt proposal based on the evidence reviewed. LG CNS described Geomundo among selected stand-alone microgrid opportunities in 2016-2017, but a 2016 policy table still showed no project operator for the island and a 2018 program retrospective said the selected private energy-island projects had stalled because low oil prices and poor economics undermined feasibility. No construction award, financial close, installed solar/wind/storage, commissioning, or operational update was found through 2026. A separate 440-500 MW offshore-wind development carrying the Geomundo name is unrelated and is excluded.
