Sault Ste. Marie already generates over 600MW, over three times their demand. The excess electricity is distributed throughout Southern Ontario. However, the transmission lines often become a bottleneck and the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Center is looking to microgrids to help even out the congestion. The city has been working since 2008 to become the “alternative capital of North America.”
The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Center is planning a microgrid as part of a $50 million clean energy fund from Ontario.
“The support will see Energizing Co. (ECo.), formerly Pod Generating, partner with the Sault Ste. Marie PUC Inc. and the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre with a view to develop a utility distribution micro grid project and support a combined heat and power project in the city” – http://www.saultstar.com/2014/01/23/council-supports-micro-grid-strategy
